CUIN 4361 Blog Entry 4

Reflection This is the second time I took a second language, but this time, I feel like I can open up with my experiences with ELL students. And it's not just because I was able to work with them along with my mentor teacher's help. It's more of like seeing the roles of ELL students in different perspectives and being seeing more insights in their experience. To start off, doing the blogs is really helpful to me in this class. At first, I wasn't comfortable with making videos for the class but in the end, it turned out to be helpful because, in a way, we are learning to communicate verbally with other people who had been an ELL student and/or experience working with them. Doing this helps me voice my opinions on the programs and teaching strategies for ELL students and makes me feel more comfortable opening up to other people. Also, I do enjoy looking at other people's blogs because I get to learn their philosophies of learning and share my views on teaching ...

Today, I interviewed with Professor Monica Gonzalez, who taught ELL students in elementary schools before teaching at UH. Some of those students come from many different cultural backgrounds, including those who can speak Spanish, Vietnamese, and/or Turkish. According to Wright (2010) "ELL students who are highly skilled in math will have difficulty demonstrating those skills until they attain enough proficiency to handle the linguistic demands of ...

Links to my 2nd blog:  CUIN Blog Entry 2 Overview I interview with my friend, Stephanie Zuniga, about her experiences of learning English as a second language. Like me, Stephanie grew up in the US with her family from a foreign country, only that her family speaks Spanish, and she is the first in her generation to learn English as a second language. Growing up, she managed to pick up English language by watching her childhood tv shows and then reading a lot of books, which were mostly given to her by her teachers. Eventually, she was able to socialize with her friends at school in English fluently. This is one of the few things I found interesting, because some people made some misconception that ELL students are born in a foreign country. However, there are some ELL students who are born in the United States and are exposed to English language growing up. According to Wright (2010), language plays a major role in developing the identity to students, and they formulat...
